This was the second painting of the day at the workshop. Both paintings (see previous post) took about an hour each to complete. This is what I mean by learning to paint "fast & loose." A good watercolor doesn't take that long to paint (a half sheet at 15" x 22" = about 1 to 1.5 hours).

This last week I introduced collage over words to my students. Many of them were fine with gluing images over the written word. The exercise reminded me of this acrylic on panel piece that I painted.

This piece started with the geometric patterns, followed by the figure, more color and alcohol, and last of all the words of Rumi; a poet I admire from the 1200's. Rumi's poetry is meant to be savored and read over and over - as is most poetry. This is the poem:

'Shadowhunters: Looking Better in Black Than the Widows of our Enemies Since 1234' - City of Bones

The other day I had the strongest urge to just draw something. I have been neglecting my sketchbook lately and if I do that for too long I start to feel very unhappy. So I started this drawing from a non-copyrighted photo I found of a young woman with a hefty dose of attitude while I was waiting in the car to pick my kids up from school.

After about fifteen minutes of drawing I realized that she reminded me of someone. A character (Isabelle Lightwood) from one of my favorite books, City of Bones by Cassandra Clare. Once I realized that, the drawing started to take on a life of its own, and it was SO much fun.

No, wait fun's not the right word to describe it, it was just enjoyable and satisfying to put on paper an image I had held in my head since I had first read these books nearly four years ago.

Drawing characters from books is something that would not have occured to me if I had not found and became friends with Kim Kincaid. She is an amazing artist who draws character studies from books she loves (a fellow bookaholic just like me!). Click here to see some more of the characters she created from this same book.

Sometimes I really feel like drawing is as close to real live magic as I can possibly get. And it is awesome.

"Tinkering" - Sketch

One sketch will sometimes lead you to another. The new sketch singles out just the barn structure and possibly how it was used in a time when "tinkering" around with stuff was the daily activity. Maybe this was a blacksmith, or maybe just some handyman working on some new fangled gadget.

Sketching provides us with not only what is there, or what could be there, but also it lets us explore our creativity and imagine new ideas. Something a photo will never let us do. I know that I keep nagging about photos, but way too many of today's artists are abdicating their role in the creative act by giving the photo the power of creation (by tracing it). We, the artist, are responsible for making the painting and for doing the act from the ground up. Photos can stir the memory, but the artist should be the one to create the work from scratch.

"Bodie Street" - Sketch

I've been doing quite a bit of posting over on Facebook lately on drawing the figure, but as most of you know, I have a passion for old ghost towns. The problem with most of them is that they get destroyed by fire and very little is left these days. One solution is to use archival photographs to show you what was there originally and what changed over the course of the town's life. This is where photography comes in handy, and we are lucky to have some of these historical records.

Now, I don't use photos to trace from, but I do use them to sort of fill in the blanks and give me some idea of what life was like back then. The above sketch is a combination of reality (what is actually still standing in Bodie), and pure fiction based on what life was like there at the time. Drawings and paintings don't have to be factual (facts never made a good painting), and they should never be a copy of some photograph (even your own). Good paintings come from ideas and how we, as artists, feel about a location. Good art comes from within, not from a traced photo of what was, or what still is. I wish that more artists out there understood this concept.

Well, I'm new to Daily Painters of Utah and so I thought I would introduce myself. My name is Trevor Howard and I've been painting and creating art for quite awhile. I enjoy painting - there's something magical about being able to create the illusion of space in a two dimensional object and being able to emphasize your view - how you see color and form - to exaggerate and place importance in your work.

Recently I've joined the ranks daily painters. Here are most of my paintings from January. They are all oil on panel and painted from life in one setting. These still lifes have given me the opportunity to explore color and to capture glimpses of everyday objects that usually only survive a week or two. Even as I painted them many changed in those few hours - slowly morphing, aging, and completing their existence to some extent. The apple oxidized, the oranges wilted under the heat from my studio lights as did many of the others, and if we could measure it, we would be able to see the ceramic structure slowly breaking down. I hope my paintings last a great long while - longer than the objects they depict and brighten and give meaning to these who possess them.

I hope that you enjoy these paintings - I hope to paint many more and post either here or on my personal blog. Ciao!

Something that always appeals to me (as far as what I want to paint next) is light. But, I think this is kind of a given for most artists. For me, specifically, the appeal is sunlight. And when I saw the sunlight shining through that top row of pomegranate seeds I thought. . . Huzzah!!! Must. Paint. Now.

My son loves fruit. He has since he was a tiny baby and I fed him mashed up bananas and squishy peaches. One night, when out looking for snacks with my husband, he decided he wanted a pomegranate. Thaaaat's right. My kid. Me. The son of the Queen of sugar and chocolate consumption chose a fruit as his snack.

When my son brought this treat home I was so excited, because of course, A) he was making good snack choices, and B) it sparked the fire in my artist's brain that's always on the look out for what I should paint next.

And it also forced me to google 'how to open a pomegranate' because apparently one does not just hack into one of these babies with a knife willy nilly.

Yep. I learned that the hard way. They're much, much prettier if you open them the correct way.

Angel "Last Temptation of Christ"

This is the Angel piece that I did as an additional painting while I was working on the "Last Temptation of Christ." The model used a climbing harness, but put it on backwards so he would incline toward me. He was clipped into a rope that hung from a ceiling beam. My studio at that time had a skylight which gave the perfect back light for what I wanted. Yes, he even wore the wings I purchased. This was a very daunting pose for him; one he could only hold for 15 minutes at a time. I placed a model stand below him, and would move some wooden blocks under his feet when he needed a rest.
The painting is 24" x 36" and is on Mahogany. The piece sells for $900.00.

Then one day the girl received a horse of her own and they grew up together. She taught him to follow at her side without a bridle or lead, and to stay in one spot, like the most obedient dog on the planet, until she called for him.

This painting is on Mahogany, which is a challenge in itself. I also ground the Indigio for the sky to get the exact color I was hoping for.

This is the first painting of the new year and was done on location in Zion National Park at the Sinawava trail head. There is a small section of waterfalls and it's a really nice place to paint as the ground is level and sandy. This painting was a good warm up for my upcoming demo as I haven't touched a brush since last December at the Art Walk here in St. George.

My good friend and fellow painter, Michelle Manriquez, was with me and did a painting of her own, even though the temperature was in the 40's. However, the sun was shining and it was a wonderful day in the park.

Synonyms for trust: confidence, hope, faith, belief, conviction, expectation, dependence, reliance.

Definition of trust: 1. assured reliance on the character, ability, strength, or truth of someone or something 2. one in which confidence is placed 3. hope for the future

Every time I lock eyes with my dog I see this trust there that I don't see with anyone else. Her trust is absolute, with a very childlike faith. She believes that I will always be there for her, that I will do my best by her. And when I see her watching me with those soulful eyes, or feel her soft muzzle rest on my feet while I paint, I think of how lucky I am to have someone who believes in me so much with a faith that is never failing.

Trust is a powerful thing.

It's something every artist must have. Not the trust of someone else in what you can do, or who you are, like my sweet dog, but trust in yourself. The belief that what you are doing, whatever you're doing, matters. That it will have an impact with someone. That it will bring you whatever it is you're looking for that made you want to become an artist in the first place.

That you can succeed. However it may be that you define that word for yourself.

That's where true confidence begins. Inside you, not from the approval, or acclaim of anyone else. It all begins with you.

Russell Black - Demo

Getting ready for a demo is a lot of work. There is the creation of the idea (see below post for the initial sketch), the materials to get ready, and of course the enlargement of the small sketch to the full size sheet (above), which in this case is a full sheet at 22" x 30" of 140lb cold pressed paper.

I don't think it's any secret that I draw these things for myself. If you've read any of the posts on this blog you know my feelings about artists who trace from photos and play coloring book with the image. I don't dislike mechanical devices as much as I dislike artists who use them as a crutch for being too lazy to learn to draw properly. As a graphic artist I routinely used cameras and projection devices to enlarge or reduce work, and I was fortunate to have them. That being said, the work was always original and not a tracing from some other source (I didn't even trace from my own photography, still don't).

Taking an original sketch and using a device to enlarge it up or down to the proper size is just fine with me, so long as it is an original sketch drawn by hand. In this particular case, due to the size of the sheet, it was simply faster to draw the sketch out by hand again vs. getting all of the equipment out, setting it up, and then projecting the image. Here is where you benefit from having the skill sets. I don't waste time with grids or preliminary lines, I just go at it. There are a few computer programs that can produce a set of tiled images at any size, but anything much larger than a half sheet gets too large in file size for most PCs or Macs to handle. So, it's back to good old basic drawing skills, which never fail to work under any circumstances. A #2 yellow pencil and I'm good to go.

With all of the hard work done, I can now concentrate on painting this subject at the 3 hour demo I'm giving tomorrow night. I plan on finishing this full sheet in that amount of time, so it should be a fun evening.

Painting the First Snow in December

If any of you out there have not gone out and really looked at the colors of snow, I highly recommend it! You really have to look at snow, and you'll see that it's warmer

farther away in light then up close. I could see a pink hue on the mountains in the distance, and the snow colors are beautiful, soft pastels that are so luminous....not the white you

think... can't wait to paint the snow again, just waiting for that snow to fly

Last Temptation of Christ, Linda Dalton Walker, Oil on Linen

I was reading what Russell Black said about not painting from photos, etc. and it reminded me of painting this image of the crucifixion of Christ. It is a very large painting, 48" x 63", and I felt as if it filled my studio. Even though many of my paintings have creative, imaginative elements, I firmly believe in painting from life. I believe I am able to achieve a much more realistic and solid image.
For the Christ figure, I had a cross made that would fit the model. The model and I laughed when I told him he had to come for his fitting of the cross. The studio I had at that time had a cross beam across the ceiling. The Angel is a rock climber so he tied a secure length of rope around the beam and reversed his climbing harness so he would angle toward me.
Both poses were extremely difficult for the men, and they could only pose for about fifteen minutes before they needed a break. They were never together in the pose, and have never met.
Before I even started the painting, I created a clay model about 12" high, next I created several thumbnail sketches, and a small drawing in charcoal. I also painted a smaller study before I even thought of tackling the larger piece. In addition I did separate paintings of the Angel and Christ figures by themselves. I will post them at a later date.

My two oldest boys are back at school and the house is unusually quiet today. It's just me and my little one and the unlit Christmas tree that still sits in the corner because I'm hesitant to pack it away and say goodbye to all the good times we had together this holiday season.

Maybe that's why I chose to paint this image. A mom and her baby, no matter the species, walking this life together.

It's something that's always on my mind, but especially lately. I'm feeling a little sad about how quickly my children are growing, I'm trying to enjoy every single stage of their life, and hoping that I'm teaching them everything they need to know to grow to be the men God intends them to be.

Becoming a mother has been the greatest joy in my life and I find it interesting that even when I paint subjects other than my own children this theme still pops up in my work. And I imagine that it always will.

"Outback Shack"

Getting back to work is always tough at the beginning of the year, especially since I had to take a part time job due to low class enrollments. I usually shut the studio down during the holidays anyway, and getting started up again generally takes me a few weeks. However, since I have a watercolor demonstration coming up on January 14th, at the Heritage Days Festival here in St. George, I needed to get my act together and get back to work a bit sooner than usual.

This small sketch (4" x 6") was done at home while sitting in front of my fireplace. It's a "remembered" scene from over in Mt. Carmel, UT, and is from my excursions out that way last fall. I either sketch on location or from memory, choosing to work this way rather than from photographs (and tracing from a photo is definitely out!).

I often get asked this question during a demo ("Do you work from photos?"), and it's becoming a sad state of affairs when artists can no longer draw for themselves, but must resort to tracing from a photo because they lack any real drawing skills. The general public always assumes that art is somehow made this way (take photo, trace photo, put paint in between the lines and copy photo - yuck!), and based on what I see these days, I can't fault them for their assumptions. I can certainly spot the "traced" from a photo painting a mile away and as Henry Fukuhara always said, "If you can't draw, then you can't paint." I have to agree.

In any case, my work is always original and is done by hand without the aid of the camera. Leave photography for the photographers, and let's make real art with our own hands. I now have to enlarge this small sketch up to a full sheet of watercolor paper (22" x 30"), and this will be done by simply drawing it larger, directly on the paper. No projectors, no tracing, and no grids. Just good old fashioned drawing skills and most importantly, no erasers! They damage the paper's surface, so I never use an eraser on any of my work.

I'll have three hours in which to complete this full sheet painting and I'm excited to be doing this one "live" in front of an audience.

I'm sure there are many of us who this time of year would like to be a Hermit and hide from all of the crowds.

The Hermit is reminding you to step back from society and begin a soul or knowledge quest. Being alone is not as crucial as the need for spiritual illumination and the attainment of knowledge. Use the Hermit as a meditation tool when you have unfinished projects from the past that is begging you to give birth to new forms. Re-enter the womb (cave) of the mother and give birth to new forms.

Owls symbolize the spirit, the carriers of our dreams. Listen to your dreams; they are the messengers between the spirit world and humanity. Looking backwards the Cerberus reflects upon the unknown parts of the self. Hermits retreat from society enables him to assist others through life's processes. This archetypal "old wise man or woman" holds forth the light of knowledge, but the seeker must go to him.

Hermit's astrological sign, Virgo, obsesses about getting it right and will often follow down blind valleys where the concern for details obscures the overall vision.

Every so often I paint a portrait, whether it's human or animal, that does exactly what I wanted it to. I've captured one small aspect of who this person (or horse as it seems to be in this case) is. It's something I really try to do, but not something that always happens. With this portrait of Troy I think I've captured something of what I felt about his personality.

There's something very noble, and gentle about this horse. I've seen a picture of him reaching his neck out so a child can stroke his face, and another picture of him standing in the sunshine with his head held high, looking exactly like royalty.

This was one of those paintings that flowed from the first moment I set brush to paper. I love it when that happens as flow is such a tempermental little beast. :) Here one minute and gone the next.

This last fact was proven to me again yesterday afternoon when I sat down to paint while my youngest son napped. Argh. The flow was just not happening.

And I was all out of cupcakes too. Double Argh.

I remember sitting in the elementary school's library, when I was about seven years old, in this little circular seating area, and listening to the librarian read 'The Polar Express' by Chris Van Allsburg for the first time. I was captivated. I don't think I moved during that entire story time.

I LOVED that book. I loved the whole idea of being taken to the North Pole on Christmas Eve on the Polar Express, listening to the wolves howl outside the train, tasting the rich, hot chocolate on the ride up there, and of course the chance of being chosen by Santa to receive the first gift of Christmas.

And the thing I think I wanted for Christmas the most that year was one sleigh bell. A real one from Santa's sleigh, preferrably from Dasher's own harness (who was my favorite reindeer).

On Christmas morning I was thrilled to see that one small present under the tree that I knew had to be a jingle bell from Santa's sleigh. When I opened it and saw the small silver bell inside, and held it to my ear to hear it's soft jingle, I knew that Santa had come through for me. Christmas was magic.

And now that I'm grown up and I get to see Christmas through my boys' eyes it still is. More so now than it ever was. :)

I've loved horses all my life and that they were a huge part of my growing up years. Now that I don't get to be around them as much as I did when I was a girl, I feel an even stronger pull towards them whenever I see them, like a gravitational pull, or tractor beams or something.

I saw this horse last winter in a field I was driving by when out looking for new painting material. I pulled my car over and walked over to the fence. There were a few horses in the field but this one headed in my direction right away, whether she was hungry for human attention or carrots I can't say. Although she did not seem to be too disappointed when my pockets turned up empty of any edible horsey treats.

Or maybe she recognized what I was feeling, that I needed to see her and rub my hand over her velvet nose and fluffy winter coat. The way she calmly gazed at me, so gentle, friendly, and curious ignited all those emotions I'd felt about horses for so many years as a girl.

Her eyes just got to me, they were so kind. It really is true what they say about the eyes. They are the windows to the soul.

Daily Paintworks is hosting a fundraising challenge called Every Mother Counts. I saw this challenge posted a few weeks ago and really wanted to donate a painting, then almost at the same time I found Steve Evans photography (babasteve on flickr) which I completely fell in love with.

I looked at the photos of these children he has from all over the world and was moved to tears by their innocent, unguarded expressions and very humble living conditions.

I thought of my life with my three children and how blessed we are with good health, and also how I may have taken that for granted at times.

The DPW auction site states, "Every 90 seconds a woman dies from childbirth. Fully 90% of those deaths are preventable. The aid organization Every Mother Counts is training midwives in Afghanistan, opening health clinics in the Democratic Republic of Congo and shipping unused medical supplies to South Sudan. These are tangible, practical projects designed to combat maternal mortality and injuries worldwide."

I wanted to help. Every mother deserves to live, when death is preventable, through pregnancy and labor so she can hold and love her child.

Every child deserves to have their mother to protect, care for, and love them throughout their life.

I've had my share of emergencies and health problems with my pregnancies. With my last son I vividly remember sitting in the emergency room and waiting in fear for hours, when unknown problems developed, just so I could see my baby's rapid little heart beating in the ultrasound, assuring me that he was still alive and safe and that I was too. I had a doctor I could rely on and medical care was constantly available when needed.

And I am so thankful for that. Every mother deserves the same.

If you feel so inclined to share this post I would be so touched. :) It's not for me, but for mothers everywhere. Every little bit helps.

I belong to a small portrait group and this was our challenge for September. I'm a little behind. :)

What drew me to this image was the rich, deep colors in the skin tones, the shape of her lips, and her wide, expressive eyes.

Tarot Justice is reminding you to be cautious of your desires and that the will of others is trying to pull you away. This painting is advising you to finish what you have started. Justice's astrological influence is Libra which is all about balance, order, and harmony.

This was the second painting done "live" out at the plein aire event last Saturday. One problem with photography and computers is that sometimes you lose the subtlety of the colors in a light wash, and in this case, the image above doesn't do justice to the actual piece. In any case, I was able to complete two paintings in the time frame of the event (11am to 4pm), and most importantly, I had fun doing it.

You might be wondering why I chose to paint both of these subjects (see the post below for the painting "Navajo House"), neither of which was immediately in front of me that day. Well, plein aire doesn't mean, "to copy what's in front of you." Common mistake and misunderstanding. Just because I'm painting out on location, "en plein aire," doesn't mean that I have to work from my environment. Sometimes its just nice to go outside and paint without having to struggle with subject matter.

In the case of this event, it was actually more like an outdoor demo as there are people constantly looking over your shoulder and engaging you in conversation while you work. In that situation, I'd rather paint from an established idea that I can execute than something new and undetermined as to outcome.

I've been pondering the question of how we work as artists. For example, is there any difference between working "live" on location, working from a photograph, or working from memory when you get back home? Certainly, good arguments can be made for each process, but is there any difference in the end result?

Working on site has been standard procedure for centuries, and provides the artist with a full 360 degree view of the subject. A wonderful thing, provided you have the time and resources to travel. Photography, on the other hand has always been a bit suspect. There is no doubt that a painting which has been traced from a photo is anything but real work (the artist did nothing but copy an image), but what about the use of photos just as reference materials? Apart from the copyright issue (always use your own photos and you'll never get into trouble), does a photo(s) provide one with enough information?

Then there is memory. Can one make a decent work of art solely from one's memory of a location? Is there enough stored up there in the brain to actually produce a full image?

Of course, the nagging question is, did I produce the above sketch while on location (ignore the copyright date, I just put that on), or did I sketch it from several photographic reference photos, or did I pull this scene from memory? Does any of this matter at all in the end?

I will be out, painting "live" in downtown St. George at a plein aire event this Saturday, October 15th, from 11 am to 4 pm. I'll be on the corner of Main St. and Tabernacle, in front of the Sunset Framer (the gallery that sells my work). There are other artists also working on Main Street for this event, so should it should be a fun day. I am planning to get two paintings done in one day, depending on the drying time and humidity.

This was the first painting on Day 2 of the Taste of Dixie fair. A half sheet is a good size to do on location. Its not some "post card", teeny weeny thing. Its big enough to be considered a good sized painting, but yet small enough to accomplish in a couple of hours. I've tried full sheets in the field and they are just a bit too large to handle easily. A half sheet, a 2" wide flat brush, and I'm a happy camper!

Three year olds make wonderful models.

They are more than willing to put on a variety of costumes and interact with all sorts of props (although edible ones, especially candy is preferred).

Three year olds don't think they're too "cool" to model for their artist mother nor do they break down into uncontrollable giggles when I inadvertently spell the word s-u-P-P-l-y out loud ("P P!! You said pee pee!! hahahahah!" This is what happens when you are the only FEMALE in your home. You miss the undeniable appeal of toilet humor.)

Their modeling fee is very, very reasonable. (see the candy note above)

Three year olds have the ability to turn everything around them into an adventure, and by so doing allow you to see adventure where you wouldn't have before. For example, this is not a boy in a wizard costume selecting candy for his Halloween bag. No, no. He is Merlin, or Harry Potter selecting the necessary ingredients for a powerful potion or magic spell.

And best of all, they are always around, being too young to go to Hogwarts just yet, always smiling, always happy. . . Except when you decline their request for candy bars before breakfast.

Then there is always the possibility that they might 'accidentally' turn you into a toad.

I had a lot of fun painting this hanging guy. Many people were curious and couldn't figure out how I was able to paint him upside down. Ah, trick of the trade.

The Hanged Man's image connects to the European Odin who is the God of Magic, inspiration, war, poetry, and death. The myth relates how the birds flew around the world returning with news to their master.

This was the second painting that I did at the first annual art show at Tuacahn. While my first painting (see post below), of the day was done wet-into-wet on the half sheet, this one was done wet-on-dry. The multiple, overlapping, transparent layers were made possible by the afternoon heat (the temp hit 97 degrees at noon), and I was able to complete the painting in an hour's time. When doing this type of painting with multiple, complex layers you really need to think ahead as the colors will optically combine to make new color mixes (there is no wet blending). Also, you need to apply each layer with a light touch to keep the previous layers from re-wetting and possibly causing what we call "mud." In some areas there are four to five overlays of color and yet, not a single "bad" area of color. Doing this painting "live" on location with spectators watching just upped the ante and made this painting more fun to execute.

This stallion's name is 'Golden Sunlight of Hermits' owned by Sandra Butterfield of Hermits Cobs. I saw a photo of him on Facebook and fell in love with him. He has such a kind eye and expression. And just look at his coloring, and gorgeous feathered feet! *sigh* I HAD to paint him. Sandra says he is as friendly and kind as he is gorgeous. :)

One of the great things about being an artist is that your eyes are opened to everything around you.

You see things that most people miss, like the intense purplish blue mixed in with all the sparkling green on a dragonfly's body, or the way a baby's soft cheek turns a rosy orange when he's sitting in the sun stacking towers of rainbow colored blocks with chubby hands.

Life as an artist is good.

And yet. . . Sometimes I find myself just going through the motions. Living my life, but not really seeing it.

So this morning I tried to change that. When I went running I breathed in deep when I passed a field of fresh cut alfalfa hay, I listened to the rushing sound of my breath burning in and out of my lungs, felt the tension of my muscles pushing for just a little more speed.

When I came home I watched my husband's face when he was getting ready for work, taking in every handsome curve and angle (for those of you that don't know, that's him in the banner above), that I know so well, like it was the first time I'd ever seen him.

I marveled at the relative silence in the car when I took my two older boys to school. No arguing, no teasing, just the sound of the audiobook "A Series of Unfortunate Events, Book The Ninth" playing in the background.

I opened the lid on my watercolor palette and watched the sun glint off of each color well, shining and sparkling and calling my name.

I heard my son, just three years old, tell me "you're my best friend Mom," saw the way his hair that's always just a little too long curled over his ears. The downward cast of soft lashes against soft cheeks.

And I knew then that seeing, really seeing, the way an artist sees is a gift.

But it's also a choice.

I choose to see, as often as I can.

Keep it Simple

The trick to making good sketches is to follow the old adage, "Keep it Simple." Above is a simple setup for sketching, whether in the studio or in the field. I use 8.5" x 11" plain copy paper that I also use in my computer's printer (I buy this stuff by the ream). The paper is acid free and most importantly, cheap. I actually hate sketchbooks. They are way overpriced and no matter what type of binding you have (stitched or spiral bound), they never lay flat or fit nicely on the bookshelf. I use a three hole punch to allow the loose sheets to be put into a three ring binder notebook when they are completed.

I do this for several reasons, but the main one is ease of use. In a binder, I can take out any sketch I want and then scan it into the computer for further use (I have a program that can enlarge any sketch to any size, even as big as my living room wall if necessary).

I use an old piece of mat board, cut to the same size, with a window that is a 4" x 6" cut out. This window is the same ratio as a matted watercolor sheet at 2:3 (the matted window on a half sheet is 14" x 21"). I have similar mats for canvas ratios as well. When I begin a sketch, I take a pencil or marker and draw the 4" x 6" frame boundaries on my sheet of paper.

I use a 5.6mm mechanical pencil with a 6B graphite stick. This graphite is soft so that I can make a dark mark easily and smear the graphite using the paper stomp (you could also use a tortillion). A kneaded rubber eraser completes the kit. I use it for lifting values, not for erasing.

Another tip, notice how I sketch beyond the boundaries of the frame. This connects you to the sketch as it appears that you are actually in the scene while you draw. This is something that I picked up from Milford Zornes. Remember, don't stop at the boundary lines, but extend your thinking beyond them.

By using a large graphite stick to sketch with, you eliminate those nagging urges to put in tons of details. More sketches, and paintings, are ruined by the overload of details. Nature has more "stuff" in it than you can possibly capture in a small sketch or even in a large painting. The same holds true for photographs, which also capture too much detail. The idea of a sketch is to simplify, simplify, simplify. You will make a better sketch, and a better painting, if you will ruthlessly eliminate all of those details from your work.

Remember, keep it simple!

"Orderville Part 2" - Russell Black - Sketches

"Orderville Farm #2"

Another sketch from my Orderville expedition. A bit more about what was actually there, but I've made several important changes from the original scene. The building had another chimney on the end of the smaller structure. Probably the original fireplace for the one room cabin at the time. The two story part of the building would have been built later on, after the farmer had established the land's viability as a productive farm.

From my point of view, this original chimney gave the structure an unnecessary weight on the left hand side that seemed to over balance the composition. Following Whitney's advice to, "...sacrifice everything for the sake of unity", I eliminated the chimney. I felt that there still needed to be something to counter-balance the weight of the right hand side, so I added the water trough to the immediate foreground. This seemed to do the trick in a less demanding way.

This is the difference between copying what is there and creating and designing a painting. Yes, I do want to get across the subject, but I also need to design a good looking painting. Unfortunately, both nature and man are not in the picture making business, that's my job as an artist.

The next step in the process is making a solid design pattern...

Regardless of the subject, the design needs to be dynamic. One of the strongest and most basic design patterns is a simple checkerboard of light and dark. If you look closely at what I did with the values here, I created a simple alternation of light and dark, but in an organic way. See how the light sky is next to the dark tree shape, which in turn is next to another patch of light sky. Notice how the dark tree shape on the left merges into the dark shapes of the building, but then are next to the light shapes of the building (which are in sunlight). If you continue across the design, those light shapes run into yet another dark mass on the right hand side. Across the top of the frame, light to dark to light. Across the lower part of the frame, dark to light to dark. A checkerboard.

In two values I've created a dynamic alternation within the picture frame. The light and dark shapes are certainly not the squares of an actual checkerboard, but are more organic, more artistic. If you were to take a pair of scissors and cut out the light and dark shapes themselves (apart from the subject matter), what you would get are interlocking puzzle pieces. In other words, a nicely designed painting full of entertaining shapes. As Whitney also said, "...we are shape makers, symbol collectors, and entertainers."

"Orderville House" - 5 minute sketch

The above sketch was done on my last drive over to Orderville, UT, and is of a little farmhouse not far from where Milford Zornes lived and worked. There are two things that make this sketch valuable to me, 1) is that interprets rather than records, and 2) that it only took 5 minutes to accomplish.

On the first issue of "interpretation," I feel that art should never be a copy of a scene, or worse, just a copy of a photograph. Being near where Milford created so many wonderful works of art, I had to pause a moment while doing this sketch to remember that the artist should always be looking for ways to become the storyteller rather than just the mere reporter of facts. Milford was always very opinionated on the subject of creating art that was, above all, original.

My approach to art is to create something that describes how I feel about the subject, not just record what is visible to the eye. This sketch is simplified down to just what is important rather than being cluttered with useless details. Here, symbology replaces realism.

When we consider that all we can paint on the flat, two dimensional surface of our canvas (or paper) are flat, two dimensional shapes, the notion of actually painting a "realistic" subject is just ridiculous. By definition, a painting is anything but real. Its 100% all fiction! Since the only things that I can draw and paint are symbols (in point of fact, the only two marks that one can make with any drawing or painting tool are the dot and the line), everything else is just illusion, created symbols that imply a subject. This sketch, therefore, accomplished the all important goal of converting the real, observed world into something that I can actually paint from.

Since this sketch implies (rather than records) and uses marks that I can actually reproduce (with a brush), its value is enormous. On the one hand it gives me the guidance for making a finished painting and on the other hand it reinforces the creative process.

The second issue, one of speed, makes this sketch valuable for yet another reason. Time is money, plain and simple. In the real world, the faster that I can do these things, the more of them I get done. I consider these sketches money in the bank.

Russell Black - Workshop - Advanced Design & Watercolor Techniques

Since Crystal did such a fine job with her "Ten Hard Earned Truths" posting, I thought that I might give a few thoughts on the subject of workshops, so here goes...

1) Do some research.

Before you sign up for a workshop, you should know something about the instructor. First, look at his or her body of work. Do you like it? Does their work inspire you, or offer you something that you would like to do yourself? I think this is the best reason to take a workshop from someone, in that they possess certain skills or attributes that you would like to have as well. Is that instructor willing to share what he or she knows about painting? Avoid instructors that promise you tricks and gimmicky techniques. Avoid the "sizzle" and go for the steak.

2) Come prepared to work.

That may sound obvious, but I can't tell you how many times students show up without the required materials. "Did I have to bring that?" is the most common utterance that I hear from students. The answer is, "Yes." Before you come to a workshop, review the instructor's materials list and bring what is listed on it. Don't start second guessing the instructor or decide to substitute items. Most of us don't care about brands or paint color "names" (those can get quite funny at times), but if the instructor lists a 2" wide flat brush, bring one. If he or she calls for an easel, bring one. Don't assume that you will be provided for at the workshop. Generally, tables will be there, but not at an outdoor workshop. I've been to workshops myself that get over booked, or where table space was severely limited. I was thankful that my normal kit includes both easel and additional side table. I was able to setup on my own and provide space for another participant to work in.

Also, the term "workshop" implies the idea of work. If this were a "play-shop" or a "socialize-shop", then it would be called that. The word "work" is the operative idea. Come prepared to work the entire time. The instructor may do a demo (usually 2 hours), but when it is your time to get into action, do so.

3) The Instructor.

Ok, now we come to a sticky subject, the instructor. The instructor's job is to teach you something. He or she is not there to be your best friend. They are not there to pat you on the shoulder every time you make a brush stroke, or tell you how wonderful you are as a painter. The instructor's job is to show you how they paint and why they do things a certain way. Some are more hands on than others. Some instructors demo only. Some will walk the room and offer individual advice and some do not. Each instructor is different. Don't expect personalized instruction when you are in a room with thirty other students.

Also, don't be too concerned with the instructor's overall demeanor. Not every instructor can be a kindly grandfather and some have a pretty gruff exterior. I personally know both types, and the best advice I can give you is that without a bit of grit you can't make a pearl. Some of us old guys can get a bit cranky at times, but we all want you to succeed, and that's the important part. Grow a tougher skin, look past our faults, and see what it is that we are trying to teach you.

4) The Student.

Another tricky subject. The instructor's responsibility is to teach and your responsibility is to learn. What I see all too often is the student who comes to a workshop and then never tries a single thing that the instructor suggests. That student then complains constantly that they never learned anything (well, they didn't), and then they blame the instructor. The fact of the matter is that for you to be a student, you have to be willing to learn. You have to set aside what you know or think you know in favor of what the instructor is trying to teach you. You might not agree with everything an instructor says, but at least give him or her the benefit of the doubt and give it a try.

I've been at this painting business for well over forty years now and every time that I attend a workshop, I go back to square one and act as if I know zip about painting. I put all of my skills aside on the back shelf and listen to what the instructor has to say. I follow the instructor's lesson. I do what the instructor does and as funny as this may sound, I get the same results that the instructor did in the demo. By opening myself up to the learning experience, I actually learned something. Will wonders never cease.

5) The Critique.

Usually at the end of every day there is a critique session. Again, this is your opportunity to get some valuable information. The instructor's job in the critique is to tell you what you did correctly, what you did incorrectly, and most important, how to make your work better. If all you want to hear is how wonderful you are as a painter, then you've missed the boat. The critique isn't a mutual admiration society group meeting. This is the time for a strict analysis of the work, and that can sometimes be rather painful. I know, I've been there myself.

The critique session must take a hard look at the work, or its just a waste of your time and the instructor's. When you are first starting out, expect most of your work to fail in its attempt. This is to be expected. The problem with most students is that they want to be masters of painting practically overnight and never want to hear the bad news that their paintings are poor quality. Again, grow a tougher skin.

Take the critique and leave the personal feelings out of the equation. Ok, your painting stinks. Now, what did the instructor tell you about the painting and what did he or she suggest to fix the problem? If the advice is to scrap the painting and start over, then that's what you do. If all you need to do is to adjust the values or use less detail, then do that. In the next painting, make the changes in your approach and put up another painting for another critique. Don't be discouraged at failure. Remember, Rome wasn't built in a day.

Stop taking the critique as some personal affront to your character as a person.

6) The fun is in the doing.

When all is said and done, a successful "fun" workshop from my point of view is when I learn something. If its just one new idea, or if I was able to correct a problem that I've been having, then it was well worth my time to attend. For the time that I spent in the workshop, I actually accomplished something. I did the best that I could do and came away with an experience that I can use in the future. In this respect, I've never been to a "bad" workshop.

I've had tough instructors (more like drill Sergeants), some really nice instructors, a few ditzy ones, but I've always had a good workshop experience from my point of view. I didn't agree with every instructor, or like every instructor, but I did respect every instructor for what they had to offer. Would I go back and take a workshop from each one, given the opportunity? Absolutely. Even the gruff old bird who shredded my work for an entire week taught me something, and that was well worth the trip as it turned out later in my career.

My point is that I have fun at workshops simply because I'm there to learn. Learning isn't always pretty, or comfortable, or even nice at times. To grow, we often have to destroy what we've built before. That's the way life works.

So, put on some steel armor and jump into the battle if that's what it takes. Swing that brush, splash some paint, take your licks, and enjoy the journey.

Why do we do art festivals? What an adventure Saturday turned out to be. Great people watching that is for sure. The afternoon brought pouring rain - by the buckets. I had to scurry and put everything in the center of my covered space so it wouldn't get wet. The wind hit my neighbor's nicely covered space and knocked over her jewelry counters. Ah, Mother Nature. One hour later the sun was shining and the people came back out and I sold some more decks of my Tarot cards.

The Chariot card reminds us to seek mastery over the self rather than the environment. Good advice when setting up for a street fair.

Creating an Idea

When you begin to put together a painting, it all starts with an idea. The sketch (above), shows my concept of a day at Pier 39 in San Francisco. Before moving to Utah, my family lived in the East Bay area and we often took day trips into the city via the BART system. The sketch is typical of a Robert E. Wood setup for this kind of wharf scene, a basic pyramid with an offset center.

The next step is to add in the values. I begin with a midtone gray at the outside of the design. This will frame the piece. The final step is to bridge across the design to connect the painting together.

By checker-boarding the midtones across the design, I unify the composition and give movement throughout. When I paint from this sketch, I will use a variety of colors within the midtone range to give bounce and life to the painting. I'll add the final darks and concentrated color to accent certain areas that I want you to look at. This type of painting has no single "focal" point, but uses the idea of "all over interest."

When you begin a painting, take the time to work through your idea and create something different and dynamic.

The Return of Sketchbook Tuesday and Motivational Monday. . . on a Tuesday. :)

There are some things I've learned on this path towards being an artist that have been on my mind a lot lately. Thought I'd share a few of them with you.

1. Not everyone will love your work. Not everyone will like your work either. In fact, you could say that there is a distinct possibility that somewhere out there someone really kind of. . . hates it. Some people might even be downright mean and hurtful about it. Let the haters hate. But don't you hate. Accept this and move on.

2. But. . . Some people (probably many people) will fall hopelessly, SA-woon, head-over-heels in love with your work. Your work will move them to tears, you work will change their life. Your work will bring beauty and light to others who wouldn't otherwise have a chance to see it or feel it. This is what being an artist is all about. Accept this and move on. But don't let it go to your head.

3. There will be days ahead when you will feel like every particle of talent you may have ever had has left you for good. Gone. Adios. Disapparated faster than Hermione Granger. Some days you will struggle, some paintings simply won't work out. That's okay. It's supposed to be like that. Without some kind of failure we wouldn't constantly be striving for that next great painting, novel, photograph, beaded earrings. Whatever. Accept this and move on.

4. But. . . There will be days ahead when you will create something so breathtakingly beautiful and emotionally moving you will not believe it came from your hand. But it did. Because you have been blessed with talent, dedication, and perseverance. Because you didn't give up when things got hard.

5. When you first start out you will suck. A lot. Accept this and move on.

6. But. . . This is not a bad thing. Suckage is only the evidence of growth. You are growing, learning, improving day by day. It will get better. You will get better.

7. Artistic success is not about money, or number of sales, or fans, or who you know. No matter what anyone else says. Accept this and move on.

8. Artistis success is about following your heart, creating what matters to you, not whatever is popular, or what others like. If you follow this trail, creating to please others, you will not be happy. Creating will become a chore, a must-do, not a passionate love affair.

9. Being an artist means a lot of time spent by yourself. A lot of time spent in the studio, alone, opening a vein and letting it bleed on the canvas (figuratively speaking of course). Accept this and move on.

10. But this does not mean that you are alone. You have your friends, spouse, kids, parents, siblings, dog, cheering you on and wishing for your success just as much as you do. It means you have friends and connections you've built with like minded souls spread throughout the world who've got your back when you need them. It means that you pray to your Heavenly Father knowing that He is just as concerned about the desires of your heart as you are. He will help you. You are not alone. Not ever. Don't ever forget that.

This painting began as a simple exercise in value connectivity (see post below). Done in a more traditional style, circa 1960, this type of painting was common among architects and the California group. Everything has been simplified down to symbols that require short, quick brush strokes. These painting techniques have been "forgotten" almost as much as this building, an old lodge that is no longer in use.

A few weeks ago it was my baby's birthday. He turned three years old. On that day he and I stayed home, just the two of us (now that the older boys are in school all day), and played with all his new toys. And it was the sweetest day I've had in a long time.

We made a Play-doh lunch and had a Play-doh picnic with his stuffed animals in his new little indoor tent (which was a rather tight fit for me).

We played Spiderman vs. the Green Goblin and Iron Man vs. Dr. Doom (for some reason I was always the villain. He he he).

We played a real, live version of angry birds, stacking towers of blocks and pigs so we could launch little birds at them and knock 'em down.

We made birthday cupcakes and licked the beaters.

We had fun in small and simple things. :)

And later that night, before I tucked him into bed, I held him close and closed my eyes and remembered that three years ago at this exact time I was doing the same thing with a much smaller little boy.

I had to paint the Heffalump again*. He's starting to act a little diva-ish, demanding that I paint him. Even when I told him I was going to put him in a face off with this fierce dragon, he still wanted to pose.

I don't think he realized what he was in for. I mean look at that face! So clueless, so trusting. Poor little guy.

But I must admit that I underestimated this little Heffalump. In a classic case of the victorious underdog, he defeated the dragon. Killed him with kindness I guess you could say. Well not really killed since the dragon did live to see another day, but a defeat just the same!

They seemed to reach an agreement without having to exchange blows (phew! I did not want to explain to my son why his Heffalump was suddenly sporting a black eye. . . or worse). Heffalump said he would not give Dragon that cute look anymore as long as Dragon promised to end his evil-attempted-maiden-eating days and use his mighty powers for good instead.

Dragon agreed. . . somewhat reluctantly. :)

Workshop - Advanced Design and Watercolor Techniques
September 26th to 30th - 5 Days - $100
Level - Intermediate to advanced
9:00 am to 4:00 pm each day (1 hour break for lunch)

This week long workshop will cover the advanced design and watercolor techniques that will take your work to the next level. If you already know the basics, then these techniques will move your work forward to creating loose and vibrant watercolors. Each day of the workshop will be filled with demonstrations and practical exercises which will give you control over these advanced techniques.

Day 1) Design Concepts. The first day will cover creating design patterns and the under-structure of a painting. From reference materials, the student will learn to organize the subject on the page dynamically and create patterns of movement throughout the composition.

Day 2) Subject Conversion. The second day will cover the modification of the subject into the shape patterns that can be painted on the surface of the paper. Along with this, the student will learn the various ways to recreate the illusion of space and form. Discussion will include both traditional linear perspective and the use of conceptual "flat" space circulation.

Day 3) Lighting and Color Concepts. The third day will cover the different lighting and color approaches possible within the composition. Altering the lighting patterns can dynamically charge your painting with impact. We will cover traditional "scene" lighting, constructed lighting, and internal "picture" lighting. Manipulation of colors can express moods and give your work even more impact.

Day 4) Watercolor Concepts. The fourth day will cover the various ways that we can alter or modify the watercolor washes and creatively use brushwork to enhance the painting. Students will learn how to control and manipulate a wash to suit the needs of the design and will learn how to make expressive brush marks to accent the work. Saying more with less is the goal for this day.

Day 5) Project Painting. During the week, each student has been working towards an idea for a completed painting. This final day of the workshop is for the execution of that idea on paper. The students will have the entire day to produce a finished piece that will be critiqued at the end of the day.

What is a Heffalump you ask?

A Heffalump is a cute and cuddly elephant type creature that is often purple, pink, or blue and lives in the 100 acre wood, where it is mistakenly believed to generally wreck all kinds of havoc. But this could not be further from the truth!

Heffalumps are shy and gentle creatures who love to laugh and eat Rumpledoodles (Heffalump cookies).

They are not to be confused with Woozles, which are very sneaky, or Wockets, that are often kept in pockets.

Although this happy beast generally gets the blame for stealing Winnie The Pooh's honey it really is not guilty of such a crime.

Because you see, Heffalumps are not all that fond of honey at all.

In fact, if one were to try and capture a Heffalump, one might want to use orange slices.

There's a rumor going around that a certain purple Heffalump has a weakness for juicy orange slices. . .

And I may or may not have been witness to such a thing. :)

This painting invites the viewer to partake of the mystery that awaits them. This is part of triptych that I painted in oil on linen. I wanted the model to appear as if she is coming out of the geometric design, but yet is part of the whole. The triptych was very difficult, but I always like challenges. The geometric design is my own design created from about five different stencils. I tried a variety of designs before I came to this final decision. The model was incredible, and as one could tell a dancer. Such grace!!
